Gua Sha for the Face: How to Use It Step by Step, and Which Oil to Choose

A gua sha is always used on clean, oiled skin: a few drops of plant oil, then slow, light strokes from the centre of the face outwards and from bottom to top. Five minutes, three to five times a week, is enough for a relaxed face and a fresher complexion.
What is a gua sha?
A small, flat, polished stone, usually jade or rose quartz, from a traditional Chinese massage practice. Its curved edges and notch follow the contours of the face.
Which oil to use?
- Combination to oily skin: jojoba.
- Mature skin: prickly pear seed oil.
- Dry skin: argan or avocado.
- Sensitive skin: sweet almond.
How to use a gua sha in 6 steps
Tie your hair back, cleanse your face and apply 3 to 4 drops of oil to face and neck. Hold the stone almost flat, at about 15 degrees.
- Neck: from the base of the neck towards the collarbone, 5 strokes each side.
- Jawline: with the notch, from chin to ear along the bone, 5 times each side.
- Cheeks: from the corner of the mouth and nose towards the ear, 5 times.
- Under-eye: with the small rounded edge and no pressure, from inner corner to temple, 3 times.
- Forehead: from brow to hairline, then from centre to temples.
- Finish: sweep each area towards the ear, then down the neck.
Pressure: light on the face, slightly firmer on the neck. It should never hurt or leave marks.
Gua sha or jade roller?
The jade roller is easier for beginners and the eye area; the gua sha allows a more precise massage, especially on the jawline.
