Beard oil: which one to choose? Castor, jojoba or argan, the guide

For a soft, nourished and visibly fuller beard, choose a pure plant oil: jojoba oil for the skin under the beard, argan oil for softness and shine, and castor oil to coat and strengthen sparse hairs. A few drops a day on a clean beard are all it takes; the castor, argan and jojoba trio brings all three steps together in one organic beard pack.
Why use oil on your beard?
Beard hair is thicker and coarser than scalp hair, and the sebum your skin produces is not enough to nourish it along its full length. The result: a scratchy beard, dry ends going in every direction, and skin underneath that feels tight, turns red after shaving or flakes.
A pure plant oil works on both at once:
- The hair: it becomes more supple, softer to the touch, shinier and easier to comb.
- The skin under the beard: it is nourished and protected, and stops itching.
- The look: a coated hair looks thicker, so the beard looks fuller and neater.
Which oil for which beard?
| Organic oil | Texture | Best for | The result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jojoba | Light, absorbs fast | Short beards, combination or itchy skin | Comfortable skin with no greasy feel, fine for the morning |
| Argan | Silky | Medium to long beards, coarse hair | A soft, shiny, well-groomed beard |
| Castor | Thick, rich | Sparse areas, moustache, damaged ends | Coated, strengthened hair and a visibly denser beard |
| Sweet almond | Soft, glides well | Sensitive skin, after shaving | Soothed, supple skin |
Jojoba oil: the base of the routine
Its composition, close to sebum, lets organic jojoba oil absorb in seconds: it nourishes the skin under the beard without making it greasy or leaving the hair sticky. It is the morning oil, the one you can apply before heading to work.

Argan oil: softness and shine
Rich and silky, organic argan oil from Morocco softens even the coarsest hairs. The beard stops scratching, is easier to style and takes on a shiny, groomed look. Ideal as soon as your beard grows past a few millimetres.

Castor oil for the beard: what it really does
Organic castor oil is the most sought-after beard oil. Very thick, it coats each hair, strengthens it and limits breakage: the beard looks denser and fuller, especially on sparse areas of the cheeks and moustache. Massaged into the skin and hairs every evening, it promotes the growth of a denser, stronger beard.
Its rich texture is used sparingly: one drop is enough for one area, or mix it half and half with jojoba to lighten it. To learn everything about this oil, read our complete castor oil guide.

How to apply beard oil: the 5-step ritual
- After the shower: apply to a clean, slightly damp beard, when the hair absorbs best.
- Measure: 2 to 3 drops for a short beard, 4 to 6 for a long one. Warm them between your palms.
- Massage the skin: work the oil in with your fingertips, against the grain, down to the skin.
- Smooth the lengths: run your hands in the direction of growth, from root to tip.
- Comb: a wooden comb spreads the oil and tames the beard. In the evening, add one drop of castor oil to sparse areas.
How often: once a day, or every other day for oily skin. After shaving the cheeks and neck, 2 drops of jojoba or sweet almond oil pressed onto the skin give the comfort of an alcohol-free aftershave.
The beard pack: all three oils together
If you don't want to choose, the hydrating and strengthening beard oil pack brings together castor, argan and jojoba, for less than buying them separately. Pauline's tip, founder of Naturoleum: "In the evening, one drop of castor oil massaged into sparse areas; in the morning, jojoba and argan for softness." A great gift idea for a bearded man.

Mistakes to avoid
- Too much oil: the beard gets heavy and shiny. Start small and add a drop if needed.
- Forgetting the skin: that is what feels tight and itchy; the oil must reach it.
- Pure castor oil all over: too thick, it sticks. Keep it for targeted areas or blend it.
- Scented or synthetic oils: choose a 100% pure oil with no fragrance or additives, especially for sensitive skin.
- Being irregular: results show with a daily routine, within two to four weeks.

Frequently asked questions
Which oil is best suited to the beard?
Jojoba oil suits every beard and the skin underneath; argan brings softness and shine to long beards; castor strengthens sparse areas and makes them look denser. The three work well together.
Does castor oil help beard growth?
Yes: massaged into the skin and hairs every evening, castor oil nourishes, strengthens and promotes growth. It also limits breakage, for a visibly denser beard within a few weeks.
Should I use beard oil every day?
Yes, one application a day gives the best results. For oily skin or a very short beard, every other day is enough.
Beard oil or beard balm?
Oil nourishes the hair and the skin; balm, waxier, is mainly for styling. For care, pure oil is the foundation.
Can I use beard oil on my hair?
Yes: argan on the ends, and castor mixed with jojoba as a scalp massage, in a 30-minute oil bath before shampooing.
