Oil for curly hair: which organic plant oil for defined, frizz-free curls?

Oil for curly hair: which organic plant oil for defined, frizz-free curls?

In short: for curly hair, organic argan oil is the most versatile (defined curls, tamed frizz), organic jojoba oil suits fine curls that get weighed down quickly, and organic avocado oil suits thick, very dry, coily curls. Used to seal damp hair and as a weekly hair oil bath, a cold-pressed organic plant oil leaves curls softer, shinier and easier to detangle.

Curls that puff up at the slightest humidity, rough ends, definition that fades by the end of the day: curly hair needs more nourishment than straight hair. A pure plant oil, with no silicone or fragrance, is the simplest way to give it what it needs. Here is how to choose the right one and use it for your curl type.

Why does curly hair need oil?

On straight hair, the sebum produced by the scalp slides down the strand to the ends. On curly hair, every bend slows it down: lengths and ends stay dry while the roots may be normal. The hair cuticle lifts more easily, which causes frizz, dullness and tangles.

A plant oil does three things for curls:

  • it nourishes the strand with fatty acids and vitamin E;
  • it seals in moisture from water and your leave-in conditioner, which limits frizz;
  • it coats the ends, so they break less when you detangle.

Which oil for curly hair? The table

Your curls The oil to choose Texture Best way to use it
Fine curls, waves (type 2), hair that gets greasy fast Organic jojoba oil Very light, non-greasy 1 to 2 drops on the ends, damp hair
Medium curls (type 3), frizz Organic argan oil Fluid, absorbs quickly Seal after your leave-in
Tight, coily or kinky curls (type 4), very dry Organic avocado oil Rich, enveloping Pre-shampoo oil bath + sealing
Brittle ends, damaged curls, growing your length Organic castor oil Thick Blended (1 part to 3) in your oil bath

Argan oil: the all-rounder for curls

Cold-pressed in Morocco, argan oil is rich in oleic and linoleic acids and vitamin E. Fluid, it absorbs quickly without leaving a greasy film: curls look more defined and shinier, and frizz calms down, even in humid weather. It is the ideal oil to seal a leave-in conditioner on medium curls.

How to use it: warm 2 to 3 drops of organic argan oil between your palms and scrunch it into your lengths, from ends to roots, on damp hair.

Jojoba oil: for fine curls

Jojoba is actually a liquid wax, close to sebum. Very light, it nourishes the ends without weighing down waves or making the roots greasy. It is the oil to choose if your curls go flat as soon as you use a rich product. Our jojoba oil comes from Panama.

How to use it: one or two drops of organic jojoba oil on the ends, after styling or to refresh your curls on day two.

Avocado oil: for tight, very dry curls

Rich and enveloping, avocado oil (Spain) is the most nourishing oil in the range. It brings suppleness back to coily and kinky hair that breaks easily, and makes detangling easier. Use it mainly as a pre-shampoo oil bath, or in a very small amount to seal the ends.

How to use it: apply organic avocado oil section by section on dry hair, leave it on for 1 hour (or overnight) under a towel, then wash.

Castor oil: to strengthen and promote growth

Thick and rich in ricinoleic acid, organic castor oil (India) strengthens hair and coats damaged ends. Massaged into the scalp, it is the go-to oil to promote hair growth and keep long, full curls. Too viscous to use neat on all your hair, it works best blended with avocado or jojoba oil.

How to apply oil to curly hair: 4 steps

  1. Wash gently with a mild shampoo, then apply your conditioner and detangle with your fingers or a wide-tooth comb.
  2. Hydrate: on wet hair, apply your leave-in conditioner or a little water spray.
  3. Seal with oil: warm 2 to 4 drops of oil in your palms and scrunch your curls from ends to roots, focusing on the ends.
  4. Let it dry naturally or with a diffuser, without touching your curls. The next day, one drop of oil between your palms is enough to refresh them.

Once a week, do a pre-shampoo oil bath (avocado + a little castor for tight curls, argan or jojoba for fine curls). Everything is explained in our hair oil bath guide.

The right pack for your curls

For dry, damaged curls, the dry and damaged hair oil pack brings together the oils that nourish and repair your lengths. If length and fullness are your priority, the hair growth pack (castor, black seed and jojoba) is made for you.

Mistakes to avoid with curly hair

  • Too much oil as a leave-in: curls get heavy and lose their bounce. Start with 2 drops.
  • Oil on dry hair straight out of bed without moisture: oil seals water in, it does not replace it.
  • Brushing dry after applying oil: it breaks the curl pattern and creates frizz.
  • A refined or fragranced oil: choose a virgin, organic, cold-pressed oil.

Why choose Naturoleum oils?

Our oils are 100% pure, cold-pressed and COSMOS Organic certified by Ecocert; the brand also holds the Cosmebio label. They are packaged in France by an ESAT (a sheltered work organisation), in glass bottles, and keep for 12 months after opening.

Frequently asked questions about oil for curly hair

What is the best oil for curly hair?

Argan oil is the most versatile for curls: it nourishes, defines and tames frizz without weighing hair down. For fine curls, choose jojoba; for tight, very dry curls, avocado.

Should you put oil on wet or dry curly hair?

For daily care, on damp hair after your leave-in: the oil seals in moisture. An oil bath is done on dry hair before shampooing.

Which oil is best against frizz?

Argan and jojoba oils smooth the hair cuticle and limit frizz, even in humid weather. A few drops are enough.

Can you use oil on curls every day?

Yes, in small amounts (1 to 2 drops) to refresh curls or nourish the ends. The richer oil bath is done once a week.

Is castor oil good for curly hair?

Yes, blended: it strengthens hair and promotes growth, but it is too thick to use neat. Add one part to three parts avocado or jojoba oil in your oil bath.
