Cuticle and Nail Oil: The 5-Step Evening Ritual

Cuticle and Nail Oil: The 5-Step Evening Ritual

For soft cuticles and stronger nails, massage one drop of organic plant oil into each nail every evening: jojoba oil for a quick, non-greasy treatment, sweet almond oil to soften dry cuticles, and castor oil to strengthen brittle nails. One minute before bed is all it takes: with this simple habit, ragged cuticles fade away, nails regain their shine and your hands look better week after week.

Why cuticles dry out (especially in autumn and winter)

The cuticle is the thin rim of skin that protects the base of the nail. When it lacks lipids, it hardens, splits and turns into little snags. The causes are almost always the same:

  • frequent hand washing and hand sanitiser, which strip the skin's protective film;
  • cold, wind and central heating, which dry hands out from autumn onwards;
  • nail polish remover, gel polish and acrylic or gel extensions;
  • cut or torn cuticles, which grow back thicker;
  • housework and washing up without gloves.

A plant oil brings exactly what is missing: fatty acids that nourish, soften and protect both the cuticle and the nail. It is the idea behind salon "cuticle oils", but 100% pure, with no silicone or fragrance.

Which oil is best for cuticles and nails?

Organic oil Texture Ideal for Bonus
Jojoba Light, absorbs fast Everyday care, even during the day No greasy fingers: you can pick up your phone straight away
Sweet almond Soft, glides well Dry cuticles and hangnails Perfect for massaging the whole hand
Castor Thick, rich Thin, soft or brittle nails Coats and strengthens the nail; blend it to make it lighter
Avocado Rich, cocooning Very dry hands, damaged cuticles An SOS overnight treatment in winter

Jojoba oil: the everyday cuticle reflex

Organic jojoba oil is actually a liquid wax, very close to the skin's own sebum. It sinks in within seconds, nourishes the cuticle and leaves a satin, never greasy, finish. It is the ideal oil if you dislike the feel of oil on your fingers or want a quick touch-up during the day. Our jojoba comes from Panama.

Sweet almond oil: to soften ragged cuticles

Soft and comforting, organic sweet almond oil (almonds from Spain) softens dry cuticles within a few days, so you will hardly need a cuticle pusher. It also suits sensitive skin and the whole family.

Castor oil: for stronger nails

Thicker, organic castor oil (India) forms a film that coats, nourishes and strengthens the nail: thin, soft nails peel and break less. One drop is enough, ideally blended with sweet almond or jojoba oil so it spreads easily.

The 5-step evening ritual (1 minute)

  1. Clean, dry hands and bare nails: oil does not get through nail polish.
  2. One drop per nail, placed directly on the cuticle.
  3. Massage in small circles for about ten seconds per finger, from the cuticle to the tip of the nail.
  4. Gently push back the cuticles with your thumb or a wooden stick, never cut them.
  5. Massage the rest of the oil into your hands and leave it on overnight (cotton gloves help when hands are very dry).

Once or twice a week, treat yourself to an oil soak: 5 minutes with your fingertips in a bowl of warm water with a spoonful of sweet almond oil, then one drop of castor oil on each nail.

Our homemade cuticle blend

In a small, clean dropper bottle: 1 teaspoon of sweet almond oil, 1 teaspoon of jojoba oil and 10 drops of castor oil. Shake before each use and keep it on your bedside table or in your bag. The blend keeps as long as the oils it contains, away from heat and light.

Mistakes that damage cuticles

  • Cutting your cuticles: they grow back harder and the base of the nail is less protected. It is better to soften and push them back.
  • Pushing them back dry: always after the oil or after a shower.
  • Skipping care after nail polish remover: that is when nails need it most.
  • Applying oil just before painting your nails: polish will not hold as well. Do the treatment in the evening and your manicure the next day, on degreased nails.
  • Waiting for winter: care works best when it starts before the skin cracks.

The cuticle and nail pack: all 3 oils together

The nourishing oils pack for cuticles and nails brings together castor oil (nails), sweet almond oil (cuticles) and jojoba oil (quick care): everything you need for the evening ritual and the homemade blend, for less than buying them separately. See also all our cuticle oils.

Frequently asked questions

Which oil is good for cuticles?

Jojoba oil for non-greasy daily care, sweet almond oil for dry cuticles and hangnails, castor oil for brittle nails. A blend of all three makes a complete treatment.

How do you use a cuticle oil?

One drop per nail on the cuticle, massage for about ten seconds, then gently push the cuticle back. Massage the rest of the oil into your hands.

When should you apply cuticle oil?

In the evening before bed, so it works all night, and during the day whenever your cuticles feel tight. Avoid applying it just before a manicure.

Is jojoba oil good for cuticles?

Yes: it nourishes and softens the cuticle, absorbs very quickly and leaves no greasy film. It is the most practical oil for daytime care.

Does castor oil make nails grow?

No oil makes nails grow. Castor oil nourishes and strengthens them: being less brittle, they keep their length more easily.
