Dry, chapped hands in winter: the plant oils and routine that work

Dry cold outside, heating indoors, frequent hand washing, hand sanitiser… In winter, hands are the most exposed part of the body. The result: skin that feels tight and rough, sometimes cracked on the knuckles and around the nails. The good news: with a simple routine and the right plant oils, you can get soft hands back within a few days.
Why do hands get so dry in winter?
The skin on the back of the hand is thin and has few sebaceous glands, so it naturally produces little sebum, the protective film that keeps water in the skin. Add cold, dry air and central heating, and moisture evaporates even faster.
Frequent washing, hot water and harsh soaps strip away the remaining protective lipids. The skin barrier weakens: skin turns rough, red, and may start to crack. That is why a water-based cream is not always enough: hands need to be nourished with lipids, not just hydrated (read Hydrating or nourishing: what do plant oils really do?).
The 3 best plant oils for dry hands
1. Avocado oil: the most nourishing
Rich and smooth, organic avocado oil is perfect for very dry skin. Its monounsaturated fatty acids (oleic acid) absorb well and soften the skin. Ideal for an overnight treatment and rough areas such as knuckles.
2. Sweet almond oil: the gentlest
Versatile and very well tolerated, organic sweet almond oil soothes tightness and softens skin, even sensitive skin. Use it daily with a quick massage after washing your hands. Learn more: sweet almond oil benefits and uses.
3. Argan oil: the lightest
Rich in vitamin E, argan oil absorbs quickly without a greasy film, the best choice during the day. Discover its other uses for skin, hair and nails.
Bonus: castor oil for cuticles
Dry cuticles and hangnails are common in winter. One drop of castor oil massaged into the cuticles at night softens them and strengthens nails (see castor oil for nails). Our cuticle and nail pack brings together the right oils.
The soft-hands routine in 4 steps
- Wash with lukewarm water, never hot, using a mild soap. Pat dry, especially between the fingers.
- Apply the oil to slightly damp skin. 2 to 3 drops are enough: the oil locks moisture in and absorbs better.
- Massage for 1 minute: backs of the hands, knuckles, around the nails.
- Protect your hands outdoors with gloves, and wear rubber gloves for the dishes.
The overnight SOS treatment for chapped hands
- In the evening, apply a generous layer of avocado oil (5 to 6 drops per hand);
- massage cracked areas and cuticles well;
- put on cotton gloves and leave on overnight.
Repeat for 3 nights in a row, then once or twice a week for maintenance.
Mistakes to avoid
- Washing your hands with very hot water.
- Going out into the cold with damp hands.
- Only treating your hands once they are already cracked: consistency is key.
- Pulling at hangnails: nourish them with oil instead.
